After BVB9 it was soon time for acting-president Sara Sokola to move on to a new journey.  With her departure, and Dan's continued absence while finishing his Master's degree, a new acting-president had to be instated.  Welcome to our new acting-president - Mary Summers.

Jeju Furey 2.0 - The torch is passed

On September 1, 2012 the leadership of Jeju Furey changed hands in order to keep the foundation going in its founder's absence.  In April 2012, Dan Nabben, the founder of Jeju Furey, was officially accepted into a Masters of Kinesiology program – the academic title for Physical Education – specializing in Sport Management at the University of Western of Ontario (recently renamed, Western University). Although the research for his thesis will keep him very much part of Jeju, being overseas made it impossible for him to run Jeju Furey.

Dan posted on the Jeju Furey Facebook group page stating that after BVB 7 he was going to shutdown the organization for (at least) two years. This was due to a combination of things including being unable to find a suitable replacement willing to take over everything.

That changed shortly after BVB 7 because of another combination of things. First, Sara Sokola persisted in convincing Dan that she was capable of taking the reigns. As a result of this persistence and a through a series of meetings, Dan got to know her and saw her hard work and ambition as, among other things, Sara immediately setup a website for Jeju Furey. Second, and this was still during the week immediately after BVB 7 – Troy MacLellan said he would be willing to run the volleyball tournaments. Third and fourth, David Kirchner and Hwang Jaesuk (황재석) told Dan that they would do what they could to keep Jeju Furey going.

Together, this foursome had all the elements necessary to be the new executive board for Jeju Furey. In addition to their plethora of skills and the required desire to work hard, between them they had lots of experience in helping run events, dealing with officials, bilingualism, high levels of intelligence, the ability to work fast and keep several plates spinning at once, and the skill to recruit more help and delegate. It’s important to indicate at this point, that these four were not the only people willing to take on a lot of responsibility. Mary Summers, Stephanie Hennington, Sachin Mahajan, Kendra Pugh, Tobias Hewitt, Elizabeth Holbrook, and others, also approached Dan volunteering their abilities, to the extent that they could, to help keep Jeju Furey out of hibernation.

In the first four months this group was at the helm, they held four events raising over 10Million krw, and bringing a lot of fun to a lot of people.

For all those who have enjoyed Jeju Furey events since September 2012, you have this group to thank.
