Jack Quinn, Miriah Lawrence, Leo Castro, Evan DiLauro, Sarah Yaroslasky, Matt Onnen, Young’hee Ji, Alexis Oesterle, Aida Matulevičiūtė, Amy Kim, Matt Leman, Chris Dwyer, 다빈, 하나, Jessica Sicard, Rebecka, Yeejin Kim, 정재량, 손보권, 고나영, Paul Ormond, Tara Franklin, and the six 관광대 students, and to those who we missed.
***The heavy lifters***
A whole truckload of work goes into a big BVB weekend and almost all of it is done behind the scenes by a small dedicated group. This time the big guns were Stephen Smith, Elizabeth Holbrook, Albert Eunsan Yuudai, Jaesuk Hwang, Brady Paron, and of course; the heaviest of them all (hehehehehe), Troy MacLellan. Their supporting cast – so to speak - included Sarah Brodie, David Kirchner, Andrea Bluteau, Jack Quin (NB one ‘n’), Tobias Hewitt, Cade Akers, Dan Quick, E’vone Starks, Jun and Mr. Bo from the WCC.
Jack Quin was instrumental in connecting Jeju Furey with the World Conservation Conference (WCC) and their 1,000,000won in sponsorship.
Jaesuk was pivotal in the meetings with government officials and played a huge role in keeping BVB 7 from being cancelled.*
Stephen Smith and Elizabeth Holbrook put in a lot of hours getting various odds and ends ready and Brady put together another excellent clean-up crew for the ‘after-the-tournament’ portion as well as getting all sorts of things ready in advance, including a late-night solo endeavour to get team boxes ready.
Cade, Tobias, and Quick setup the courts and got other parts of the beach ready.
Troy MacLellan does so much, it is easy to lose track of it all. He’s an intricate part of so many steps of the organizing of the event. He’s there loading the truck, setting up the courts, taking them down, waking up early, staying out late, writing speeches, reading them, filming, doing emergency runs, you-name-it. It’s been said before and it’ll be said again; without Troy and this fine crew, not only could we not conceivably have a event, but we could scarcely even have a tournament.
Special thanks to Darryl Coote and his Jeju Weekly article.
Lastly, a shout out to Hugh MacDonald. It’s been more than three years since he left the island but his contributions and evermore present. Whatever amount of fun anybody had at BVB 7, they owe a large part of that to Hugh. Without him and the net-system he engineered, that is to say, he invented a very inexpensive, long-lasting, simple, durable, flexible, and highly portable way of setting up nets on the beach, there just wouldn’t be the event that we all enjoy. Thanks, Hugh.
