Jeju furey Takes the stage for its first ever improv event!

Picture
On December 14, Jeju Furey hosted another first-ever event - Improv!  Wonderful hosts, Shannon Warren and Yolandi Rademeyer, pulled together some of Jeju's bravest and most eager performers and tested their comedic skills with a variety of Improv games including Scenes from a Garbage Bag and Who's Line is it Anyway? skits.  Participant Huw Coverdale Jones showed off his individual with some stand-up comedy.

With 16 participants and a little over 60 people in attendance, host venue, The Factory, was packed with those looking for a laugh - and they got it! A special thanks to The Factory and the volunteers who made delicious snacks for the auction snack table including Dominic Lister, Dominique Le Breton, Cynthia Loiselle, and Elle Lucademo. All the efforts together made for another successful event and thank you to Emily Baker and Elizabeth Holbrook for being great volunteers and thank you to Thu Van Ho and Calvin Lewis for the pictures videos of our first Improv night which raised 506,000krw.

Teaming up: Jeju furey and the JDC

Picture
In November, representing the JDC, long-time Furey supporter Albert Oh approached Jeju Furey with a great idea; to join forces again (as they had with Jeju Art Fest in 2011) to help raise money for Christmas Orphanage Drive 3.  The JDC was aiming for new ideas for a social welfare program and wanted to find a place in the community where they could focus their efforts.  Once again, Albert's passion and skills pulled through and the idea of helping out the upcoming Christmas Orphanage Drive was pitched and approved.  Through various meetings and discussions it was decided that the JDC would hold an inter-corporate bowling tournament as way to promote team building within the involved sectors and investors and also raise money that could be used to help benefit the orphanage drive.  On December 7, the JDC hosted the bowling tournament and invited Furey to join.  It was a great day getting to know each other and building relationships between Jeju Furey and the JDC.  The money that was raised was also revealed --- but here...that will be revealed in our Christmas Orphanage Drive 3 wrap-up. :-)

A big thank you to the JDC, Albert Oh, the Berjaya Jeju Resort(Malaysian Corporate building resort in Seogwipo), the Greenland Group (Chinese Corporate building medical cluster in Seogwipo. As well as to those representing the Furey and foreigner community: Tom Summers, Myles Horne, Mary Summers, Jessie Dishaw, Jay Mohammed, Zandi Nel, Taylor Fowler, Timo LaTour, Joseph Atkins, and Billy Fidanovski.

Jeju Furey 'Shoots' for the stars with its first ever PHOTO HUNT!

Picture
On August 31, 2013 Jeju Furey hosted the FIRST EVER PhotoHunt.  Five teams met at 9am, were given a list of photo challenges to complete before returning by the 6pm deadline.  With 50 challenges requiring props, ingenuity, and lots of interactions with strangers, the teams were racing against the clock, their own creativity, and the other teams.

At 6pm the teams reconvened at La Vie for drinks, laughter, the showing and judging of all the photos.  The photos were all judged on technicalities (did they complete the requirements) and then a random drawing of 5 photos were judged by the teams.  The points were tallied and winner was: Team PEACOCK!!! Congratulations!

An additional Photo Challenge was optional for the teams to complete.  A three-picture set showing what Jeju Furey means to your team.  The two teams to complete this challenge were The Peeping Toms and 김치주세요.  In a very tight judging, the winners were The Peeping Toms.  Congratulations Peeping Toms!

Together the teams and our sponsors La Vie and Momaejon Garden, raised 220,000krw!  After the passing on of our faithful truck, the proceeds from this event will go towards new transportation to help keep all the Furey events going.....Way to go everyone!

A Generous Gift

Picture
Back in June, the beautiful and talented Sarah Yaroslasky approached Furey's acting president Mary Summers with a personal endeavor that she wanted to use to benefit the Furey Foundation.  She had created an amazing play and was in the production process with a group of four actors from the Jeju expat community.  Her dream was to do a one-night showing of the play that would promote the arts as well as benefit the families of Jeju Furey.

After months of hard work, the play was already looking amazing and Jeju Furey welcomed the association with such a fabulous project.  With promotional help from Jeju Furey, Sarah and her cast set a date, time, and place for the show.

On July 27, 2013, Karima Walker, Shannon Warren, Paul Hughes, and Sarah Ranco took the stage under their director's (Sarah Y.'s) guidance, and gave a stellar performance to a packed house (over 100 in attendance) at the Jeju Stone Park.

Sarah Y. then came to Mary with the fabulous news - through ticket sales and food donations, and after costs, SUPER! was donating the 1,080,000krw proceeds it made to Jeju Furey!  Thank you to Sarah Y., the cast of Super!, and all those who helped for such a generous gift and for a fabulous night at the theater!

A visit with the Furey families

Picture
On July 14, acting president Mary Rager Summers, Tom Summers, Kaylee Summers, and Furey Executive 부정현 (Boo Jeong Hyun) met with Mr. Kang of the St. Vincent de Paul Society to visit the families, check in on them, and deliver 5 MILLION won (5,000,000krw = apprx 5,000USD) to each family.

It was the first meeting between Mary and the families and it was a touching one.  "Both families were so sweet and you could see in their faces, in their smiles, how appreciative they were to us and all of those involved in Furey," recalled Mary.  We learned that the father of our Nohyeong family was recently approved for a surgery that will hopefully greatly improve his quality of life.  Both father and son were very excited at the news and then even more excited (and relieved!) at Jeju Furey's donation that will help fund this surgery! Later in the week, Jeju Furey found out that the cost of the surgery would be around 4,000,000krw and that after the surgery a caretaker would be needed to aid in recovery; at a cost of 1,600,000krw.  Thanks to the hard work of everyone who participates with Furey, almost all of the medical expenses for this surgery are covered.  Such wonderful news!!!

On the way to the families' homes, Mr. Kang also expressed his gratitude and awe for Jeju Furey and the generosity we share with those in need on the island. So if you've ever wondered...yes, Furey's  efforts are not only recognized, they are greatly appreciated.

BVB 9 was another volleying success - May 25-26, 2013
