The Jeju Furey Orphanage Drive 2 was held from November 30 - December 25, 2012. Thanks to the efforts of Troy MacLellan, the Furey team, as well as the 100 donors from Jeju Island and all over the world, the drive raised 6,405,871krw that was used to provide gifts, and more importantly, a feeling of happiness to the children in the orphanages on Jeju. Merry Christmas everyone!

Inspired by Gidget Alaman and the real Saint Niklaus (aka Santa 'Claus) and the tradition of giving gifts on Christmas, Jeju Furey decided to get gifts for the two families that we raise funds for, and deliver them - in secret - on the night of Christmas Eve, signed, "Santa Claus". Jack Quinn, Andrea Bluteau, Tobias Hewitt, Cassie 'Pineapple' Jacinto, and Dan Nabben went shopping, wrapped, and delivered gifts that included bedding and towel sets, hats (toques) and gloves, badminton racquets and more. One of the things that made this outting so much fun was doing it all in secret and having the image of the families waking up to these big bags of gifts on their doorsteps from Santa Claus. We later found out how truly happy [and grateful] the families were for getting the gifts. This happened very quickly so it’s worth telling the story of how it came to be. Gidget Alaman, all on her own, decided she wanted to do a Christmas Party for the orphanage in 외도 (Oe’do), so she setup an event page a recruited helpers. https://www.facebook.com/events/290679260968417/?ref=3&suggestsessionid=11465201931357624366 She wanted to play games with the kids, make treats, and give gifts. The gift-giving is where Jeju Furey stepped in. We reduced the price of the t-shirts we sell and said that for every t-shirt that was bought to give as a Christmas gift for the orphans, we would match it. Within hours, dozens of t-shirts had been sold, more than enough for one orphanage, and not only was there great interest in the t-shirts but Gidget started to get more volunteers than she needed. So Susan Shain and Julie Kertesz decided to siphon off a few of them and do a second Christmas party over at the orphanage in 화북 (Hwa’buk). Both Christmas parties were very successful and the people who ran the orphanage asked both groups to come back again. The grand total of money donated to buy t-shirts was 433,000won. Twenty donors bought 83 shirts in less than 48 hours. Hats off to you all! |
