The end of May was a time of sharing Furey with the world!
2014.6.7 Founder and President Daniel Nabben gave a 20minute presentation about Jeju Furey at the NASSM Conference in Pittsburgh, PA that was held from May 28th-31st. At the Conference there were presenters from Australia, Europe, Asia, the US, and Canada and many big names in the Sports Development field were in attendance. After the presentation there was a question-and-answer section as well. After the presentation, there was a lot of positive responses to Furey and it's work. Dr. Marlene Dixon from Troy University and Dr. Stacy Warner from East Carolina University said how they feel that more research is needed in the area and began talking about ideas for future research papers. A quote from Dr. Warner: "Really impressed with Jeju Furey, I checked out the website. It's so fascinating; some close friends are involved in a program called Meeting God in Baseball and we're always having conversations about connecting people to community and sport development. So nice to see some people who have figured it out!" Throughout the rest of the weekend, Nabben was approached by people who expressed their interest and admiration for Jeju Furey and the positive things that were happening in Jeju. One person even said how hearing about Jeju Furey changed his previously cynical attitude towards Sports for Developement because he saw that there were still places that were using sports for real, meaningful purposes. Additionally, on May 29th, Acting President Mary Summers gave a 10 minute presentation at the Jeju International Forum about Jeju Furey and it's ability to unite communities through charity. After the session she was greeted with a lot of positive feedback from audience members and other presenters including the Director of Visas and the Former Ambassador of Korea to the Czech Republic, both who gave their thanks to Jeju Furey for doing so much good on Jeju Island. What a great week for Jeju Furey!! Spreading the word...spreading the love! follow this post on Facebook Behind-the-scenes part 2 ::
2014.4.15 - taking up from where we left off last time, it is worth reminding everyone that our caterers, Stephanie, Erin, and Ji’hyeon ‘Sofia’ and their teams do *all* their work completely voluntarily. They do not make a profit. And although Furey reimburses them for all the expenses so that they are not spending their own money; we know these fantastic ladies must still be absorbing some of the costs and we are all forever grateful. Remember that the next time you are served food at an event; the work is done out of the goodness of their hearts. A tradition started by the indefatigable, Christine Miller, way back at BVB1, and carried on by Cynthia Loiselle, Jessie Dishaw, Peter Jang, and Miriah Lawrence and her helpers, Sarah Yaroslavsky, Dominic Lister, Yuri Bilokonsky, Evan DiLaurio, Leo Castro, et. al. - 지현 ‘Sofia’, it turns out, not only helps Furey with catering, but also with translation. Some may have noticed her in the Visiting the Families pictures from January. She has become Furey’s liaison/translator for our beneficiaries in Iho and No’hyeong joining a small army of Furey translators along with 강유미, 김수경, Albert Oh, 김수연, 박솔잎, 김지현 (2.0 ), 완진 Reed, and 부정현. We also receive assistance from 이시아, 김지영, 김지연 (2.0 ), and 고지희. The addition of this team has opened up all kinds of possibilities for the organization and helped us reach and *stay connected with* a larger group of people; a crucial step for our long-term growth. - over in merchandise & apparel, Emily Baker has been finishing the work Britt Neufer started shortly before she left the island – and photographing members of the community modeling the shwag in order to revamp the merchandise page of the website. She’s nearly done, and the results so far are sharp. -the merchandise is still moving overseas. Over the past nine months, more than 850,000krw in gross sales have been made in Canada and the U.S., with yet another Super Monkey Frog Power shirt getting snagged this weekend. Western University’s Grad Office Assistant for the School of Kinesiology, Jacqui Saunders – mentioned in a previous post – wore her navy blue long-sleeve BVB shirt to an indoor tournament over the weekend and said she got all kinds of compliments and questions about the top. She said it was interesting because people were forced to take long looks at the shirt because it was something they'd never seen before but peeked their curiosity, and so they'd ask her about it. They could recognize that it was a volleyball but at the same time it was strange enough to them that they knew it wasn't *just* a volleyball and wanted to know what else it was, and they were very happy to learn it was tied to a charity, and were interested in purchasing apparel for themselves. …more to come… follow this post on Facebook |
It's conference season!~~ Part 2 2014.3.24 Last week we told you that president ex-terra, Daniel Nabben, would be presenting his research on Furey at some upcoming conferences and this week we have a bit more news. Tuesday's Western Research Forum was a campus-wide competition where grad students from every discipline were invited to give a 12-minute talk. Students were judged by other presenters along with guest judges and the results were released today and guess who came out on top. And at the Tri-University Conference later that week, following the presentation and Q&A period, Professor Susan Bandy of The Ohio State University simply stated, 'I want to go to Jeju.' And we'd love to have you , Professor! Come on over! And bring five other Buckeyes with you. follow this post on Facebook It's conference season!~~
2014.3.18 President ex-terra, Daniel Nabben, will be presenting the findings from his research in Jeju where he did a whopping 44 interviews (most grad students only do 10) with many of the fine folks in the commmunity. First up is -the Western Research Forum on Wednesday, March 19th, then it's -the Tri-University Conf. on Friday, March 21st, then it's -FHS Research Day on Tuesday, March 25th, and finally the big chalupa in Pittsburgh, -The North American Society for Sport Mgmt from May 28 to 31. Furey merchandise is finding an audience on campus, as well. A friend of Nabben's - another Dan, Dan Grbac - had purchased the blue bvb hoodie and was wearing it in the grad office when the head coordinator spotted it and wanted one....for each member of her family. It was only afterwards that she learned it was connected to one of her favorite students Other professors and students have also been getting themselves some Furey swag! Over 700,000krw in gross sales of Furey apparel has been made in the past 8 months - half of that in BVB10 merchandise. follow this post on Facebook |
발표 일정은 다음과 같습니다: - 3월 19일 수요일, The Western Research Forum - 3월 21일 금요일, Tri-University Conference - 3월 25일 화요일, FHS Research Day - 3월 28일 ~ 31일, The North American Society for Sports Mgmt
Behind the Scenes Part I
2014.3.30 There is a lot that goes on behind-the-scenes that helps to make this organization what it is but there's no reason not to shed a little light on these efforts every now and again, is there? - Jason and Wanjin Reed have put together a sharp-looking letter/flyer that will be distributed to all residents and businesses in Hamdeok, in an effort to get the word out about Furey and in the hopes of establishing solid relationships within the community. But that's a two-way street, we're going to need to show Hamdeok we can be a force for good there, not only by putting on fun events for a worthy cause, but by being respectful, clean, getting to know some locals, and having a meal here and there throughout the year. The Reeds are just beginning the printing stage and we will soon be calling on the community to help with the distribution which we'll tie in with some bvb, of course. All work and no play is not the Furey way - Dave Cunning has been doing double-duty. While putting the finishing touches on the logos for the BVB11 shirt, he has also been working passionately at bringing Furey (and perhaps even Jeju) its first-ever ball hockey tournament. Stay tuned!! For those interested, Dave heads a pick-up game once a week at the sports complex in Gu Jeju. Visit facebook.com/groups/jeju.island.hockey/ for info. - Speaking of logos, graphic designer Taylor Plunkett had a busy winter providing Furey with images for 8ball, WineDrive, and Hockey. He was also responsible for PhotoHunt, Christmas Orphanage Drive, Improv, Ping Pong, Darts, Boat Party, Basketball, Baseball, InnerTube, CareGiving, Soccer, and the main English Jeju Furey logo - which we shamelessly post everywhere. It's worth mentioning that Taylor is not only doing this work from the mainland, but has never actually lived in Jeju. Our community is by no means bound geographically, is it? Thanks Internet! - Staying with the visual arts, Alex Nixon has joined the fray and is currently working on a future logo for the organization. Preliminary drafts indicate a very distinct look and one that we're looking forward to adding to the collection. Alex's contributions are in no way limited to the drawing board, this is the Alex that caterer Stephanie Hennington refers to in her thank-you messages following the big events - and we all know how important the helpers are to the chefs. - Our chefs/caterers, Stephanie, Erin Gallogly, and Kim 'Sofia' Jihyon, and their teams, are the ones behind the prepared meals we all enjoy at nearly every Furey event. These ladies not only provide delicious and hunger-stopping food, but they do so in such a way that allows Furey to get the biggest bang for its buck. Just like nearly every restaurant in Korea, it's all about high quality at a low cost. ...more to come... follow this post on Facebook |
